About the map
How the map was made
The map is built from the nationwide timetable published by DELFI e. V. for Tuesday, 13 October 2026. Every train journey that day travels its route as a dot, at a steady speed between two stops. The timetable gives a path for every journey, but mostly just straight lines from stop to stop. Where stops are close together, that looks like track. We rerouted straight lines longer than 20 km along the paths of other routes and the main railway lines from OpenStreetMap. Where that didn't work either, the train takes the straight line.
The count includes every journey with at least one stop in Germany. Trains heading abroad are shown only as far as the border. This is the plan, not the real day: delays and cancellations are missing. A train counts as running from its first departure to its last arrival, including while it waits at a station.

Only the night is reconstructed. Trains running just after midnight belong to the previous day in the timetable, so they are missing from Tuesday's data. To keep the map from being empty at midnight, we show the 1,146 night journeys from Tuesday into Wednesday there, brought forward by one day. They are not included in the 41,579 journeys.
